Question 4: What significance does the continuing development of digital media technology have for media institutions and audiences?

Digital media technology keep increasing the abilities for media institutions year by year, and for past few years the change have been hudge. Starting from cameras that are being made nowadays and finishing off with marketing abilities online. It will keep developing day by day, as it allready is. There are a lot of new abilities to come which will improve the quality of films that are being distributed, which would bring more people in to cinemas and get them more interested in watching the new and improved films!
Piracy is a mega problem that the media world is comming across: Hollywood investigators claim that '' a 10 per cent increase every year in revenue lost to illegal distribution'' It might sound very shocking, but this is what it is, and it is very hard for film institutions to stop the piracy. This is why a legal requirment was made in order to make piracy illegal, but people still do it. People can easily download films for free online nowadays and the internet is a big harm to media institutions, but as media technology keep developing, the more people will just upload the films for free online. this is the biggest harm that they come across, as they loose a lot of profit.
In conclusion, media technology will keep developing, and soon media will take over the world. The technology will become even more comfortable and easy to use, the people will be more interested in technology. This I find an advantage for both, the audience of the new and improved films and the film institutions, as they will be able to distribute better films, as better tecnology will be used in the process of making as well as in the process of marketing and distributing.

"Prime Evil" Representation of gender

Sound: Non diegetic sound is used in most times within this clip. There are a lot of bridges used, where the music goes from quite and calm to very quick intense. this is a very clever way of creating attention in scenes or group of scenes when it is needed in order to express the danger. Once danger is near or soon to approach, music becomes all tense in order to tell the audience that something very dangerous and attention full is going to happen. Diegetic sound is also used in order to create more attention than there is, when the middle aged man shoots at the ground in order to scare the lady. This shows me that the man is in more dominant position at that moment, as he has a gun, where as when the dialogue is in process, the lady seems to be in more dominant position than the man.

Mise-en-scene: Within the clip there is a clear representation of different types of woman. Near the beginning there is blond quite young woman, who is digging a hole in ground with needed machinery. This represents her as quite dangerous, as she isn't put off by the fact that she could get her clothes dirty. On the other hand the other character that was a woman within this clip, that cared a lot about the way that she looked. She was worried about her coat getting dirty even though she was almost shot.  Clearly both woman are represented in different ways. The blonde girl was represented as a strong woman, that saves the day, where as the other character was being saved. Basically the blonde girl is against the usual representation of woman.
I have realised, that the use of characters is done, so it shows that females are in less dominant position and are not as involved in dangerous actions like male characters.

Editing: There is a lot of quick cutting used while escaping from the dangerous animal/creature that was attacking. The quick cutting is used in order to be able to show both, the character escaping as well as the animal attacking and chasing after the character.  Also quick cutting is used in order to make it more tense and interesting for the audience to watch. As the animal within the clip is far too large in size to be real, there are very few shots of the big animal being right near the character in physical sense. Green screen is being used in order to create the creature. The shots are created and put together in order for it to look as believable as possible. There was jump cutting used in order to get straight to the point and makes it to look more quicker.

Shots: There was plenty of different shot types used. Wide shots were seen quite a lot within this aspect. Wide shots were mostly used in order to show the setting and location that the film was set in, as well to brig a message across. There were two shots that made me realise, that woman are represented as less important within the team of man.
There was a zoom out shot, which zoomed out from middle angle and from right to the left side of the screen to a wide shot. I did find the usage of shot very informative, as it made me realise who is in more dominant position within the clip . There were 4 people walking, and the female character was seen last and in the corner of the screen.
Right at the beginning at the clip, there was a shot, when the blonde female was out of focus with the other guy, but the focus was on the character, which maybe was in more dominant position or more important within the clip. This made me feel like he could be the main character of the series or either way more important than the two other characters.
There were plenty of wip panning shots, which were very needed as the animal was moving very quickly, so the panning shots were used in order to catch the animal in action. Also there was slow motion shot used in order to catch the moment in better detail as well as to look at it with more detail. I find these type of shots very informative as it is being in slow motion for a good reason in the most cases.

In conclusion the man were represented as more powerful and dominant than female within this clip, I suppose that this is the usual representation within action films/series nowadays. Even though woman have become more independent and are being represented as more independent nowadays, there are still few aspects that show that male characters are more powerful and in more dominant positions.

The boat that rocked.

Produced by: Hilary Beran Jones
Directed by: Richard Curtis
Distributed by The Working Titles
The problems that they came across were dealing with the setting, which was the big boat as well as the music, as they had to use a lot of music within their film. As they had to satisfy their audience, they had to use music that they might like or would be attracted to.
The Boat that rocked is based on Pirate radio in the United Kingdom during the 1960's
The production costs were £30million.
As Richard curtis was involved with The Working Title, the film was already garentead to make a lot of money. Richard curtis uses a formula, which is : British films+ american actors= success.
The actors: Philip Seymour Hoffman, which is american actor. He also starred in movies like:
'Charlie Wilson's war (2007)'
"The Savages (2007)"
"Jack goes boating (2010)"
As he is well known American actor, he attracted a lot of his fans into watching The Boat That Rocked.
Bill Nighy
The Working Title use the same actors, as they are successful. Bill Nighty also starred in "Love actually", which is also one of the Working Title films"

Premiere: Star studded world premiere in London's Leichester square.

boatposter.jpg

Marketing: soundtrack called The Boat that rocked. Posters, that show the style of music(60's style), roughly the age of actors, the setting (A boat, the sea, plank). The poster sets out clear understanding of the genre, style and music that this film involves.

Sorry, this is too messy...

Producer

The Responsibility of the producer is to make sure that everything runs after the plan. The schedules, actors, props, mise en scene. These are few of things that the producer need to take care of. The producer can hire people to help him with the process, but overall it is his responsibility to make sure that everything is running after the plan. Producers job is to researching on aspects and ideas that could help to make the film be represented in the best way. Also this involves a lot of research, effort and time put to it.
The script is also meant to be chosen by the producer as well as the genre and only then it can be changed by the director of the project. So the producers role is very important.

Hotel Babylon

Representation: Representation of the ethnicity was shown in many different ways within the way that the shots were used, within mise-en-scene as well as the sound, shots and editing.

Mise-en-scene: The immigrants were dressed in simple and comfortable clothing, as they were working. They were lower class and I can tell by the way that they were treated, when they were chased after by the immigration services. Wide shots were used quite a lot in order to show the setting and them running in fear of being captured. People in higher positions were wearing suits and fancy dresses in order to represent the hotel that they all were working in, but the immigrants were dressed in uniforms or casual clothes, as they were not shown to the public as much. This also tells me that they were doing all the hard work, but wasn't really awarded for it, as they were awarded by getting the minimum wages.

Sound: diegetic sound was used in order to set the atmosphere. The sound of a person knocking at the door increased the attention in the room, which was full of immigrants. So the sound helped the scene to become more realistic, as it created a lot of attention and scare. The asian men had an accent, that is also a common representation of people that come from forint countries.

Editing: There was a lot of quick cutting when the immigrants were running in the hallway as well when the men was running to warn the immigrants. This also created attention and made me understand that the genre of this film involves a lot of action, which don't increase boredom, it just makes it more interesting for the audience to watch.

Shots: A lot of close ups of immigrants faces while in the room were used. this was done in order for us to see their emotions and understand their feelings at that moment more. Also there were few zooming shots, when from wide medium shot, it zoomed in to wide close ups. this was done in order to make it more interesting to watch, as there was different variety of shots used. There were shots, that were shot from low angle in order to show who is in higher position within the workplace. This was done when the asian men looked up to his boss or manager.

SMART Targets

Specific/motivational/achievable/realistic/trackable

1: Working on the structure of the exam paper, get more familiar with the questions. the structure of mark scheme.
2: Need to use more of media terminology on daily basis. One key word per 2 days.
3: Finding out much more on "The Working titles" as it is a big part of my media exam.

"Life on mars"

Period of time.

Props: cars-> the cars that was seen in the film were very old school and expensive to have nowadays.
cigarettes-> Staff in the office were smoking indoors, this gives me an idea of different laws    dominating at different times.
Landline phones-> People haven't discovered mobile phones yet.
Mise-en- scene-> was very old fashion. the way that the policemen talked and was dressed, it gave me an idea of him being very old fashion, as well as the offices looked very similar to ones from back at the day.
This film is about traveling in time, as all I just spoke about gave me an idea of that! Without the props it would be almost impossible to understand what was going on in the first few minutes of the scene.
Setting: Once the film started, the setting was near a Manchester bridge, but when the main character woke up in 1973, the Manchester bridge was only being constructed. I could tell that by the prop (poster) as well as the old buildings and the large amount of space, which gave me an idea, that something will be built there. The setting was meant to be the same setting from the beginning of the film, but many years ago, which is why all the props and acting had to be much different then nowadays lifestyle.
The shots that had been used were sometimes very different to what we se in Tv Drama these days. some of the shots were slow motion, there was a 360degrees shot in slow motion, in order to show the setting and to make it easier for people to understand what is going on, as it might get quite hard to catch up with everything that goes on! There also were tilted shots, that showed the main character laying on the ground. The tilted shots kept zooming closer shot by shot till the main character opened his eyes. This gave me a very weird feeling of something strange going on. And the shots were used to probably let the audience know that something very big and surprising is going to happen.
Music:  David Bowie- Life on mars. this song was written at the period of time which the film was set in. Also the lyrics of song includes the name of the film. I suppose that they have chosen the song in order to tell the story better, as the lyrics do include some of the props and situations of the film. This was non diegetic sound. Diegetic sound that was used was of birds, cars and people. There was a moment, where the sound was very different from what we saw, but it was still diegetic sound. This gave me an idea of him being out of concionse, and being brought back to the real world by the ambulance, as the sound made me believe so.

Synergy is all about two or more parties working together towards a goal in order to gain more out of it than they usually would individually. This is very beneficial, as it makes greater difference. Basically both parties gain things from one another. Tadaaaaam!! Oh and in media terms it means basically two different media organisations, which could be a production company and a recording studio recording a track in advantage of both parties for the film. This way both would be marketed and would gain something out of this corporation.

The boat that rocked marketing

This film was directed by Richard Curtis, and was made in 2009.
The poster of this film is very eye catching, as the movie is very bright, colourful and outstanding itself. Advertising correctly could decide the faith of the film, as if the film was advertised wrongly, people would get the wrong ideas and could get dissapointed.
On the poster I see 4 main characters dressed in old fashion clothing. They are on a big boat, which straight away gives me the idea of the film being based on a boat. As well the headlines makes the word 'boat' stand out.

Working title

Working title produces mostly american style movies with british actors. This allows them to make a lot of profit, as a lot of people like that type of movies. Working title is owned by Universal.

Producer.
  • Is the person, with who movie begins, as they come up with the idea.
  • Producer ingage with development. They deal with script processing.
  • Producer needs to have a team behing them in order to help as well as to save up some time, as it would be much easier and quicker if there was someone to help the producer out.
  • Producer needs to deal with money metters, as some money will need to be paid for the script writers.
The Uk film council is one of councils wich help to develops finding the uk movies.

Once a script is sorted the director needs to be found. The director need to be familiar or good with the genre the movie is written to be in. If a director that would direct only comedy would be hired for a horror film, the outcome would be a scary comedy. So the producers need to find a suitable director for the movie that is process.

At the end, it is the producers role to look at the profit they have, and try to spend as less money as possible on the film.

Cranford

mise-en-scene of the clip we watched was set in old times. Two woman that were dominating within the video was wearing a simple and plain clothing, which didn't have any sense of colour to it. their hair wasn't very well done, which tells me that they were too busy to take care of things like that. This brings out the sense of their status as well as class. As it was filmed in quite old times, I would actually call the characters middle class. the reason for that is, the first shot of a lady carrying baby and the two kids playing at the side of the road. Their social status was very low, as their house vas in a very bad condition. I would say that the lady ow the lower class was a single mother with three kids. Another character in the clip was being carried by two man in a 'carry box'. this shows me, that the lady is in upper or middle class, as she was treated as a royalty comparing to the other characters within the clip. So in conclusion I think that in this video there was all statuses clearly shown within that time period.
Shots: The shots that were used were mostly wide and long shots. I think that this was done in order to give the audience a clear idea of what time of period the film was in, as well as just to introduce all the characters. Also there were a lot of shots used, where the audience was meant to be focused on a less important things, which were actually very important, as it would help the audience to understand the story much more.
Sound: The sound used within the clip was only diegetic sound. I find this very stereotypical for the time of the period, as in old times they would use non diegetic sound too often. And if they would, it would be a classical type of music.
The setting: the house where one of the main characters in the clip lived was very simple and small in size. I would say that there was no luxuries. The house seemed very grey.

PROPS: The lady had a cat, which gave me an idea, that the lady is a middle class, as she had enough of money to take care of a pet as well, where as the lower class people would not be able to keep a pet at that time period. The cary box was a interesting prop that was used in order to show us the status of the lady that was being carried in it.

Genre: I would call it TV drama social historical realism.

The boat that rocked

Stereotype:  When stereotypes are used as visual shortcut, the audiance assumes that it is true.
Counter stereotype: this has a opposite of a stereotype. Something that you would least expect.
Representation: Is the way that media represents things. Usual representation of women would be sensitive and flirtatious, independent. Usual representation of men would usually be tough, hard, aggressive.

This film was filmed in 1960's. This time period used to be very stereotypical. There are a lot of stereotypes involved with smoking and drinking within the script. This is very stereotypical, as they talk about quiting it, as it shows the audiance that it is bad. There is also swearing involved which is a stereotype of a teenager or a young adult that aren't upper class or shows that they have no manors. Throughout the script  there was only one character that was a female, and she didn't speak a lot, which tells me that this movie are dominated by men mostly. Which would bring up the stereotypes of the time the film was set in. I find it quite surprising that one of the characters was bisexual. as it isn't very stereotypical within the time period.

Five days analysis and notes on TV Drama.

TV Drama can be -> ongoing, one off.
                            -> comedy, political.
                            -> Made up of episodes.
                            -> Dramatisation of real life.
-> 'SOAP' this word was discovered in America in 1950s when they started screening daytime TV Drama series for house wives and the advertised soap powder in between the commercial breaks.
Form: This relates to the shape or structure of the text. Oftenly linked to the narrative. This involves looking at the lenght and structure of the episode or series.
Style: This involves analysing mise-en-scene as well as lighting, setting.
Genre: This is about finding out the genre and the audiance for this sort of TV Drama. Could involve the narrative.
Conventions: This is perticular elements which makes it recognisable. This could be linked to form, language, theme or visual elements.
Non verbal language is all about (gesture, pose, stance, mannerism) Basically it is about the way that things are shown and the messages are passed on through things we see not hear in the film.
Visual language is about the way that the camera is used as well as lighing. Semiotics: study of signs and symbols.
Aural language inculed verbal language. The sound mix as an example. Atmosphere, tracks, voice over, sound effects. This all divides into two parts.

                                diegetic sound:*Atmosphere
                                                      *relevent and natural sound.
                        non-diegetic sound:*Tracks
                                                     *voice over
                                                     *sound effects

Non verbal language:
*Symbolic code of little boys hand, which reperesented the title of the movie, which is 5 days.
*The actors are all in different age groups, might be that they are relatives in some way.
*There is few scenes, where the actors are being linked somehow through non verbal language. First is when the little boy was reaching his hand in the sky, and the airplane was flying pass. This made me fell like the characters in the plane are in some way or will be linked to the little boy. The other link I knowtist was when the family was driving in the car and the lady in the car said 'whe know who loves his flowers' and then the shot straight away cuts to a old men, which is watering his flowers. This makes me think that they are on the way to wisit him and bring him some flowers.
Verbal language:
*Both, diegetic sound was used quite alot. For example, when the old men was watering his flowers. The sound was filmed behind the widow, which created very suspitious feeling.

Skins season 1 episode 1
Genre:Teenage drama which involves alcohol and drugs. It can only be viewed from the age of 18. This type of series should be plaid after 21.15. This series are plaid on channel 4 and MTV.
Style: The main actors are mostly around age of 16-18. Mise-en-scene is usual, casual clothing. Sometimes a lot of make up is used for the main character, which is Effy. Mostly filmed at school/college, which involves a lot of teens.
Form: British TV Drama series. has multiple narratives. One episode is around 50 minutes long.
Conventions:
verbal language: a lot of swearing and slang is being used.
sound: Mostly diegetic sound is used. As an exaple birds and the school bell. Non diegetic sound is used in the opening sequence.
non verbal language: manners of the actors show the age group and also their social status.
Visual language: mostly still camera shots are used. When inside, in the first episode the lightning isn't used, as it has some sunlight coming out of the window. This is being used as an advantage, as it needed to look like it is morning time. So it depends on what is relevant the episode and what the director wishes for us to see.
Byker.
Form: Tv Drama Series. Children's drama up to age of 12.It is 30 minutes long, so the children wouldn't get bored of it.
Genre: Very simple to understand and very colourful to watch, as it is important to make it interesting for the audience, as they are quite young. The story is about school and relationship between children.
Conventions:
sound: diegetic sound is used quite alot, but non-diegetic sound is being used more. This type of sound being used is kind of sound that is being used in cartoons.
non-verbal: facial expressions of the children and the way they act gives me idea of the age group the series are made for.
White girl:
Form: One off TV Drama, which is an hour and a half long. This type of tv drama takes more time to introduce the characters as well as the location.
Genre: I would call it more or less social realism type of a movie. There are kids involved, but from the way the movie is shot and from the story, It allready shows me that the main character, which is the blond young girl of the family has gone through a quite hard life.
Style: Small town family, quite poor background, dressed simply, didn't take them a lot of time to move out. From the way the movie is shot, it is easy to already tell that the all movie is going to be about the blond, young girl.
Conventions:
Aural language: The song used was relevant to their situation, as the lyrics mentioned words as, 'I can't stay here'. It made the mood change as well as made me listen to the lyrics which were relevant to their story and understand it even more through the song.
Non-verbal: Eye contact with ladies dressed in 'burka' and the main character, which gave me a feeling that the young girl is new to other religions and isn't very informed about it.
The Bill:
Form: Political drama series. 1 hour long and has multiple narratives.
Genre: Political drama series, as it said 'previously' on the screen and showed me the previous episode of it. This would be the type of series that will have different story every episode.
Style: Police station, police uniforms, police cars, a lot of attention, cases being solved and people being rescued or arrested.
Conventions:
Sounds: Both, non and diegetic sound is being used. Diegetic sound is when there is sound of phones in the office calling and non diegetic sound is used at the opening sequence.
Non verbal: the white board with victims on it, which suggested that someone is going to be rescued soon.
Verbal language: by the language that was used, I could straight away tell, that this series is about important business and is mostly for adults to watch.

TV Drama

Both Series are very different, as they differ in their theme, audience. East Enders has become very popular throughout all these years of being shown on the telly. This is also because it is watchable by person in any stage of their lives. On the other hand Skins isn’t as known as East Enders, and that is because the audience for this type of TV Drama is very limited. Firstly and most importantly it is only for people that are over 18. Secondly it wouldn’t also interest old people, as it might become too dramatic and not interesting for them. Genre is actually quite similar for both, as it involves and is all about real people and mirrors everyday lives of the main characters, as well it might sort of somehow link to the people’s lives that have chosen to watch this particular type of TV Drama.

EASTENDERS
SKINS
Length
Length of the episode I chose to watch without advertising breaks was around 15 minutes.
Length of the episode I have chosen to watch including advertising breaks was around 46 minutes.
Characters
The characters of East Enders are very much like normal people just living their lives that at times get too dramatic. There are a lot of extras used for this type of TV Drama, so there are usually new faces in also every episode.
Effy- Drug addicted girl that is one of the main characters.
Freddie- Effys boyfriend.
Emily- Effies friend. She has a twin sister.
Pandora- Effies best friend.
All of those are the main characters, and the al story is about their relationship and their dramatic lives.
Setting/location
As this is British TV Drama, the location the episode was shot in should be based somewhere in the UK. Indoors as in most cases for TV Drama there are cameras used to just bring the people out from the background and to be able to show the audience what they are meant to see and focus on.
This is also another British TV Drama episode, the location is small city in England. Indoors there are usually cameras used, but for this episode there was a scene indoors, where they took an advantage of the lights coming out of the window, and that was done to show the audience that it is morning.
Advertising breaks
I watched it on YouTube, so there weren’t any advertising breaks included.
There was 3 advertising break throughout the all episode. Each lasted for about average of 4 minutes.

East Enders episode I watched was shot at night time, which means that they had to use the lights, which probably took a lot of time. On the other hand Skins episode that I watched was filmed at day or morning time. And they used the light from the window, which must have been easier and quicker.
